dthompson049...
...aka my husband, currently ranked number one in some sort of "bracket" contest. I really have no idea what this is all about, other than it relates to some sort of March Madness type pool and that an obsession has overtaken one of us. Apparently the prize is $10,000...but apparently he usually does well the first day and then it goes in the toilet.

Neighborhood Nuisance #1
So, I posted a couple days ago how the ocean is at the end of our road and once you're there it's a short walk along the public shore to a public beach. To get to the shore, though, you have to cut through approximately 15' of the yard at the end of the road. The yard has a path to the shore framed by tall bushes and appears frequently used to access the shore. Yesterday, I received a phone call at work from Chris*, who identified himself as the son of the older couple who own the yard providing the shore access. he indicated he "didn't want to be unneighborly", however, it had been noted that we had used his parents yard to gain access to the shore with our dogs. It had also been noted that walking our dogs down the street "greatly upsets" the Weimeraner who lives down the street (belong to Chris* sister) and is frequently in its yard framed with an invisible fence. Apparently this is very disruptive and needs to stop. Also, Chris*' parents are also considering getting a dog, who will also be in the yard which will be fenced with invisible fence. Obviously, that would pose additional problems. Therefore, please refrain from using the yard to access the shore. Thank you. I may have used a "tone" when I responded, "Okay" just prior to putting the phone down a bit harder than necessary. I am now tempted to just walk the dogs up and down the street, while not using the yard to access the shore. Surely there is no law against walking the dogs on a public road? Dave advises that would be "unneighborly". I prefer "vindictive".

Ouch
You might look at this photo and ask, "What the heck is that?" Well, internets, that is my left knee. There was an incident yesterday morning. It involved the smooth, polished concrete floor of my office's parkade, a morning commute downpour, yours truly and her Vespa. As I attempted to execute a left turn in a puddle of water inside the parkade, the Vespa went into a skid. She and I did a bit of a skidding dance together (steer into the skid, right? she even spun me around in a 180!) but then she dipped me and the dance came to an abrupt halt as I met the pavement. Luckily (?) my left leg braced most of the fall and the Vespa sustained only a minor scrape on her front end. Unfortunately, that meant that I bear the scars of the dance. I've got some major bruises on my legs and today my whole body feels like I spent a few solid hours at the gym yesterday. Thankfully, nobody else was in the parkade at the time to witness this display...the embarrassment would have made it that much worse!

After the storm
Another east coast US storm blew through yesterday but the skies cleared this afternoon. So I took a break from tax prep hell and we took the monsters out for a little jaunt. Although you can't actually see the ocean from our house, it's just at the end of our street. There's a lot of coral to start but if you keep walking a bit, you come to a small secluded beach.

These guys were all over the place, hiding in coral "caves". I pulled these three out to take their mugshot...but no worries, I put them back into their shelters after their photoshoot.

After a storm, it's pretty common to see loads of Portuguese Man 'O War washed up....don't get too close, they've got a nasty sting!

Lola & Roxy weren't the only canines at the beach - this guy was playing fetch with his owner's flip flop.

A little climbing and sand walking, combined with salty air, is enough to wear these two monsters out!

Dear Winter: Please be over.
Today was by far the nicest day since we moved, so I've got my fingers crossed that Winter has said its goodbyes. It's been unfortunate timing on our part to move back just in time for what even the Bermudians are claiming is the worst.winter.ever. We headed out to the Botanical Gardens just down the road with the monsters this afternoon. This was our first real foray into walking the dogs on the busy roads and they performed better than expected for the most part. Generally there are no sidewalks here, so you are forced to take your life in your hands and walk right next to traffic. Flora is pretty limited until the weather gets a bit warmer but I did manage to get a few shots and the monsters clearly enjoyed themselves and are now fast asleep.

Ooh, she's a little runaway...
Dave was leaving for the driving range Saturday afternoon, clubs in hand, when Roxy snuck out through the front door. I heard something along the lines of "Roxy!! Roxy!! Oh, shit." We both wandered up and down the street calling her name...but Beagles aren't exactly known for their reliable recalls. I had a sinking feeling in my stomach...how were we ever going to find her? She could be anywhere and this isn't suburban Canada anymore...one of the country's three main roads is at the end of our street and there's dense foliage all around...she could be anywhere. The heavily-tattooed guy at the end of the street came out of his house, apparently having heard me calling her name and whistling. He asked if I'd lost a dog and I explained the situation. He said he was an animal warden and would put in a call to his office to let them know she was missing. Unfortunately, I then had to explain why the Roxy is not licensed (something we haven't gotten round to yet...). While I was thanking him after he'd made the call, Dave came down the street, runaway Beagle in arms. Apparently he'd found her two houses down from our house, standing at their door waiting to be let in. Relief. Crazy Beagle. Crazy husband.
(I've been delinquent with photos this week, so this is actually yesterday's photo. Hope to post another for today later on.)

Disco skull
I bought this toque in the young boys section at H&M a couple years ago and have never gotten so many compliments on an item of clothing...on more than one occasion, a total stranger stopped me in public to tell me how fabulous it was and ask where I got it! I actually have two because I thought I'd lost the first one and hurried back to get another, only to eventually find the first one.
